Five Great American Cookies and Cakes

The global recession has taken many high-profile victims - including Lehman Brothers, Woolworths and Hollywood Video being just three - but none quite so beloved as the Twinkie. Hostess, the makers of Twinkies, are the latest company to collapse thanks to hard economic times and with it they take everyone's favourite snack cake, as well as a host of other delicious treats.
In honour of our fallen snack hero, we've compiled a list of five of the finest American snack cakes and cookies. Some are widely available worldwide while others have never made it big outside of the States but they all share one thing in common; they are delicious!
Twinkies
It only seems apt that we kick off this list with the Twinkie, the tasty little snack cake that could. Soft sponge filled with cream, the Twinkie was a simple specimen but a delicious one. Over it's 82-year history, the humble Twinkie has won the hearts and stomachs of Americans everywhere, as well as gaining quite the following throughout the world.
This is no more evident than in the impact Twinkies have had on pop culture. From their classic appearance in 'Ghostbusters' to a more recent role as the solitary reason for survival in 2007's 'Zombieland', the Twinkie is as much as pop culture icon as it is a food icon and will be sadly missed.
Teddy Grahams
A lesser-known cookie, Teddy Grahams are actually more cereal-esque than the traditional cookie. Coming in a cereal-style box and in cereal-sized pieces, Teddy Grahams crackers are kind of like eating cereal from the box, except you can do it anytime of the day and anywhere you like without looking weird.
Teddy Grahams come in a variety of different flavours, including honey, chocolate and cinnamon. Strangely, Teddy Grahams are actually quite healthy too making them somewhat of a responsible treat!
Ding Dongs
Although Hostess is best known for making Twinkies, their demise has also affected a range of other delicious products, including Ding Dongs. The less famous cousin of Twinkies, a Ding Dong is a hockey puck-shaped chocolate cake filled with cream and covered with a chocolate glaze.
After Hostess collapsed, Ding Dongs are bound to be harder to get your hands on. Luckily, there are other cakes similar in style, including the UK's very own Mini Rolls!
Oreo Cakesters
Oreos are by far the most famous cookie to come out of the United States, and are well-loved (and well eaten) the world over. However, a lesser-known (and perhaps tastier) variant of the Oreo is the Oreo Cakester.
Cakester's are much harder to get your hands on outside of the US than standard Oreos but the effort is worth it; they're essentially regular Oreos with the cookies replaced by soft, spongy cake!
Nutter Butter
The name says it all; Nutter Butters are peanut-butter filled cookies that also happen to be shaped like cookies. While they definitely aren't for everyone, if you love peanut butter they're definitely worth trying!
The world won't be the same without Twinkies but as is evidenced in this article, the US has plenty of other contenders to step into their considerable snack cake shoes!
